In late 2015, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) decided to include the Yuan in its reference basket of currencies. The Chinese currency has joined the group made up of the US dollar, the Euro, the Pound Sterling and the Yen. But, what is the importance of this event and what prospects presents to Latin America? RIAL talked with two prominent economists from the region on this subject: José Luis Machinea, former Executive Secretary of ECLAC and former Minister of Economy of Argentina and Ricardo Ffrench -Davis , who is professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Chile and National Prize of Humanities and Ssocial Sciences of Chile.
